Moorkhe Naal Na Lujiye — lyrics and meaning

Read each line in layers: the original Gurmukhi, a Roman transliteration to sing from, and the English meaning. Line numbers follow the order sung in the recording.

1

Sabh ko aakhai aapanaa jis naahee so chun kadheeai.

Everyone calls You their own, Lord; the one who does not is picked out and cast aside.

2

Keetaa aapo aapanaa aape hee lekhaa sandheeai.

Each one receives the fruit of their own actions; the account is settled by oneself.

3

Jaa rahanaa naahee ait jag taa kaait gaarab handheeai.

Since no one is to remain in this world, why ruin yourself in pride?

4

Mandaa kisai na aakheeai parh akhar eho bujheeai.

Do not call anyone bad; read these words and understand this.

About this shabad

From Asa Di Vaar. When someone is pulling you into a fight you cannot win — at work, at home, online — Guru Nanak's counsel is five lines long and ends with a single instruction.

Composed by Guru Nanak Dev Ji (Mahalla 1) in Raag Asa (Asa Di Vaar, Pauri 19). MedRise Gurbani presents it in a gentle, meditative arrangement so the words stay in front — sung for listeners who want to understand as they listen.

When to listen

A prayer for arguments, ego and protecting your peace. Play it in the morning before the day begins, or whenever the situation it speaks to is on your mind. Reading the meaning first turns listening into simran.
